Evil Eye: Amulet of Protection

Evil Eye: Amulet of Protection

The evil eye symbol, also known as nazar, mal de ojo, and haram, can be dated back nearly 5,000 years ago and is represented in many different religions and cultures. This ancient symbol has been used as a protective amulet in many Christian, Jewish, Buddhist, Hindu, and Muslim practices. Today, it can be seen in doorways, on babies, and used for daily spiritual for protection, but what exactly is it protecting and how?

Amulet VS Curse

The evil eye curse itself derived from Greek culture in 6th century BCE. It was understood that the curse was casted through an envious glare upon someone else's good fortune and, as result, could welcome misfortune. It was believed that someone with much success and recognition may be susceptible to this envy. Thus, the evil eye amulet was born. This amulet made its first appearance on drink-ware and quickly adapted to the bright blue, glass form we know and love. This is thanks to the Turkish culture who created the Nazar (look) Boncuk (pearl) charm we recognize today.

Symbology

The ancient and rightfully iconic blue, black, and white colors that make up the evil eye all have great intention. The deep blue repel karma and promotes peace and protection. The white emits purity of thought and action, the black repels negative in all forms. The combination of these colors are said to offer protection of all three forms; intentional, unintentional, and unseen. The amulet itself is said to protect not only against harmful glares but negative energy and strokes of bad luck.

Taking Care of Your Amulet

The evil eye amulet is all about intention. When working with it, look into what protection you are seeking as there are various colors; green for success, yellow for happiness, red for courage and so on. Once aligning with the amulet, create a way in which you choose to honor it - it can be adorned by you or placed in a car, house, or work space. If wearing it as a bracelet be mindful of the hand which it is on. The left hand offers emotional protection, the right offers physical protection. It can be considered unlucky to wear evil eye jewelry when sleeping so be sure to remove it when you can. Additionally, if your evil eye jewelry breaks don't forget to thank it for its protection - this is considered a good omen!
